Save our plants and animals
In the last 200 years, human activities have destroyed or degraded more than 95 per cent of the country’s native vegetation. The habitats which support our unique species have disappeared or been isolated. In the worst affected areas just a scattering of small isolated pieces of bush remain, leaving plants and animals stranded with nowhere to go and little chance of surviving well into the future.
Scientists predict climate change will cause lower rainfall and more frequent and intense fires for much of the south of the continent, and an increased risk of intense cyclones and extreme rainfall over the north. As temperatures rise and rainfall patterns shift, habitats may become changed and no longer support the species they once did.
Across our network of conservation reserves and on the land we manage in partnership with others, Bush Heritage is restoring the health of habitats and reconnecting some that have become isolated by land clearing. Rebuilding the connections between these isolated areas of habitat will allow native species to move into different altitudes or across latitudes to find new homes, if they need to. Healthy habitats will protect their species more effectively than damaged ones.
With more than 195 birds and other animals and 1250 plants already listed as nationally threatened, we have no time to lose. We must act now.
