Volunteer Rangers

Bush Heritage runs a Volunteer Ranger program.  Volunteer Rangers are a conservation force of exceptionally capable volunteers who are actively involved in reserve management.

Volunteer RangersParticipants in this volunteering program demonstrate characteristics essential for practical conservation tasks.  The typical Volunteer Ranger possesses great self-reliance, knowledge relating to the land, practical skills, fieldwork experience and good physical stamina.  Volunteer Rangers are entrusted to carry out activities with minimal supervision and they enjoy meeting this challenge.  The Volunteer Ranger program suits volunteers who relish the lifestyle unique to remote, bush locations.

Volunteer Rangers sometimes bring special expertise to Bush Heritage and accomplish singular feats, for example, the construction of a herbarium at Cravens Peak reserve.  More often Volunteer Rangers are needed to complete activities such as: weed and feral animal control, infrastructure maintenance, fencing, flora surveys and erosion control.  Occasionally, Volunteer Rangers with well-developed people skills are needed to assist with visitation events.  In many, varied ways Volunteer Rangers support Bush Heritage operations.

Volunteer Rangers are independently responsible for their transport to and from reserves.  It is necessary for Volunteer Rangers to bring their own food and clothes suitable for working outdoors.  Don't forget to bring along your camera, sketch pad and musical instrument for your relaxation time.

Bush Heritage greatly values the ongoing involvement of our Volunteer Rangers and therefore endeavours to support them to volunteer.  Different kinds of support are offered such as: access to skilled and knowledgeable staff, onsite accommodation, use of Bush Heritage vehicles, and a volunteer reimbursment scheme.  Specific volunteer placements fall under the reimbursment scheme and will be discussed at the time of application.

Being a Volunteer Ranger is a fantastic opportunity to learn about a reserve, extend your skills and experience, enjoy an outstanding landscape, and help to protect Australia's unique flora and fauna. Volunteer Ranger opportunities vary with the season and the direction of conservation management plans, upcoming opportunities are listed below.

If you are keen to get involved, please check the list below and complete the relevant application form for placements that best suit you.
