Victorian woodland bird numbers collapsing

Dire warnings from new research by leading ecologists

'Native bird populations declining rapidly'

7.30 Report, ABC, Wednesday 21 October 2009

Southern whitefaceVictoria could be facing a wave of extinctions following a dramatic crash in bird numbers in the Box–Ironbark forests of northern and central Victoria over the past five years. New research shows that a shocking two-thirds of woodland bird species have declined dramatically over this period.

The research was undertaken by leading ecologists, including Dr Jim Radford, who is now Ecological Monitoring Coordinator at Bush Heritage Australia.
