Recycled Batteries Raise Funds for Bush Heritage
Bush Heritage Australia has received an unexpected financial windfall thanks to the generosity of RAC of Western Australia and its innovative car battery recycling program.
The RAC recently welcomed members of the public to deposit old car batteries at its eight Perth Auto Service Centres as part of its recycling efforts, with Bush Heritage Australia earning a small donation for each battery received.
About 1500 batteries were donated – more than 1000 greater than anticipated - with the wonderful response resulting in RAC presenting Bush Heritage Australia with a cheque for $12,000.
Bush Heritage Australia Acting Chief Executive Pamela Sutton said the money raised would be used for revegetation projects at two of its Western Australian reserves.
“We originally intended to use the donations from the recycled batteries for revegetation projects at our Charles Darwin Reserve near Dalwallinu, effectively recycling degraded areas of the reserve to create suitable habitats for native animals to return to,” she said.
“Now, thanks to the wonderful efforts of RAC and an overwhelming response from the people of Perth, we will be able to complete replanting projects at both Charles Darwin Reserve and the Bush Heritage Eurardy Reserve near Geraldton.”
Ms Sutton said Bush Heritage Australia was honoured and thrilled to partner with RAC for the environmental initiative.
“This is a marvellous result and we are extremely grateful to RAC, all its staff and supporters, and those people who have helped revegetate our natural environment by recycling their car batteries.”
RAC Batteries Product Manager Steve Buttery said he was pleased so many West Australians went to the effort of turning in their dead batteries for recycling.
"We were overwhelmed by the number of batteries coming into the RAC Auto Service Centres, particularly given this was the first time a battery recycling day had happened in WA," he said.
"Protecting the environment is very important to the RAC and because of the great response we've been able to give a sizeable donation to Bush Heritage Australia to help with their conservation work."
Bush Heritage Australia was founded in 1990 and currently owns and manages 30 reserves throughout Australia covering almost 1 million hectares.
