Bush Heritage Australia have started 2009 with an exciting billboard on Melbourne's iconic Flinders Street - right in the heart of the CBD.

From January 6th through to February 6th 2009, this super-sized billboard will be visible from Flinders St steps, St Paul's Cathedral and Federation square. The concept draws from the Bush Heritage Australia vision: to protect 1 per cent (7 million hectares) of Australia's land by 2025. We aim to achieve this by acquiring and managing land of outstanding conservation value, or by working in partnership with other landowners. So far, we currently own and manage 31 reserves throughout Australia covering over 946,276 hectares. Together, these reserves safeguard more than 242 vegetation communities, including at least 83 that are listed as of high conservation value. Over 2700 plant species, including at least 310 of conservation significance, and at least 700 bird and animal species, including 197 that are known to be threatened, are now protected on the reserves.
Utilising the Bush Heritage Australia vision in the headline enabled the development of a thought-provoking and fresh concept - using illustration depicting some of Australia's iconic wildlife and some threatened or endangered species that are currently protected on our reserves, such as the northern quoll and the fat tailed dunnart. And there are some of the classics in their too - cockatoos, wallabies, the thorny devil and of course kangaroos.
The timeline and the ascending hill in the landscape is a graphical depiction of our 2025 vision and the hill we must climb to protect our native wildlife and their habitats for future generations.
So whether you're heading into the city for Australia Day, the Australian open or simply to enjoy the multitude of events during summer in Melbourne, check out our vibrant billboard and remember to come back and visit us on www.bushheritage.org.au
