'Nameless' Sylvan Reserve

The ‘Nameless’ Sylvan Reserve is a 55 hectare property in the Illawarra region of Sydney Basin bequest from Louise Sylvan.

The reserve is situated on the steep slopes of the Illawarra Escarpment approximately 10 kilometres north of Berry and close to Barren Grounds Nature Reserve. Nameless contains remnants of various biodiverse rainforest types. Cool temperate and warm temperate rainforest species are found at higher elevations, while warm temperate and sub-tropical rainforest cloak the lower slopes and creek lines. Irwin’s Creek, which runs through Nameless, creates an almost pristine riparian and aquatic zone with pools, falls, riffles, rock ledges and boulder habitats.

Nameless is a significant habitat for a range of threatened and endangered species. Species on the reserve include the tiger quoll, long-nosed potoroo, eastern pygmy possum, feathertail glider and the powerful owl.

Some of the known plant species on the property include the Giant Stinging Tree, Red Cedar, various figs and the Brush Bloodwood.

Bush Heritage Supporter Louise Sylvan made the generous gift of her 55 hectare property ‘Nameless' and, at her request, it is to be known as the Bush Heritage ‘Nameless' Sylvan Reserve. The title ‘Nameless' was chosen by Louise Sylvan's late husband Richard, whose foresight first secured the land for conservation. ‘The ambiguity [of the name] would please him,' Louise said. We are very grateful to Louise for this far-sighted and generous gift.
