Area and Location
Yourka Reserve is 43,500 hectares in size, and lies 130 km south of Cairns in far-north Queensland. It is on the western edge of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Ravenshoe is its closest town.
Yourka is located within one of Australia’s 15 biodiversity hotspots, the Einasleigh Uplands, and in the Bush Heritage anchor region, the Queensland Uplands and Brigalow Belt. It will be the third Bush Heritage reserve in this anchor region.
Yourka also straddles two IBRA* sub-regions: the wetter Kirrama-Hinchinbrook sub-region and the Herberton-Wairuna sub-region.
*IBRA is the Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation for Australia and is a framework by which all conservation agencies assess the priority of native ecosystems for protection in the National Reserve System.
