Cattle Grazing

damage in eucalypt forest Yourka Reserve is largely intact but the lowlands have suffered from a long history of cattle grazing and weed invasion. It is in these lowlands that most of the threatened ecosystems occur.

Weeds such as lantana and a lack of fire now threaten the environmental values of the property. Pigs are damaging wetlands and may compete with northern bettongs for food.

The threatened wet eucalypt forest on the eastern boundary is being invaded by rainforest species. For centuries regular fires have kept the rainforest at bay but more recent changes to the pattern of burning has meant that the eucalypt forest is gradually disappearing beneath the encroaching rainforest.

Burning needs to be resumed urgently!
