Peniup Creek Reserve

In 2007 Peniup Reserve in Western Australia was jointly purchased with Greening Australia (WA). It is the latest addition to the exciting Gondwana Link project.

This new 2409 hectare reserve protects intact riparian, woodland and mallee heath vegetation. The property includes a 937 ha section of the upper Peniup Creek which contains excellent old-growth bush. This is the largest area of intact bushland at the eastern (Jerramungup) end of the Fitz-Stirling section of the Gondwana Link project Link.

Peniup supports at least five of the the Gondwana Link Functional Landscape Plan's conservation targets: Yate woodland (all three types), Mallet/Moort woodland, Tammar and Black-gloved wallabies, creek systems. Around 220 ha of the reserve is currently regenerating and there are plans to actively revegetate further sections of the reserve.

Creeks and waterways are important natural corridors of movement and arguably the most endangered ecological communities in the region. Peniup protects a significant section of Hegartys and Peniup Creeks upstream of the Peniup Nature Reserve. It is particularly significant that the creek systems within the property include several long, deep pools. This property is believed to contain some of the most “protectable” creek systems in the area.

The reserve provides important refuge areas for fauna like the Tammar and black-gloved wallabies. The threatened red-tailed phascogale has also been recorded inthe past and is believed to persist in she-oak thickets.
