A rewarding week volunteering at Bon Bon

about  Bon Bon Station Reserve

Jenny Taylor and friends recently volunteered at Bon Bon Station Reserve. They were working with Kate Holmes (Bon Bon Station Reserve Field Officer) on the Bettong Recovery Program. Here Jenny provides an account of her time at Bon Bon.

Our experience of Bon Bon with Kate was fantastic. The property looks spectacular and is having one of its best years for a while, according to Mike and Julia, (Bon Bon Reserve Managers)!

I enjoyed working out in the field clearing tracks and checking cameras and always learning a little bit more about plant and bird identification. Kate has a real passion for her work and to hang out with her for a week was like being in a big outdoor school as she showed us around the property and shared her knowledge of the different ecosystems present on Bon Bon.

We were very excited to be able to positively locate an Australian Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) under it's host Western Myall (Acacia papyrocarpa) - showing off new botanical names we learned.

What a special place! It was very rewarding and enjoyable to contribute in a variety of ways from track clearing to homestead maintenance to tailoring Kate's work vehicle to the needs of her work.

Thanks for the opportunity, and I hope to be able to do more at some stage."
