Sunday the 29th of September saw the first running of the Carnarvon "Gate2Gate" ultra-marathon, or Gate2Hospital as Murray refers to it. 55km of undulating to hilly cracked clays and loose sand.

The idea was concieved by our 12 month volunteer Bryan West in September 2012 who has run the New York marathon a few years ago so he "thought" he had a fair idea of the pain to be endured and the idea was quickly supported by Alison Wilson, Emma Burges and Donna Oliver.

5;30am saw the predawn start from The Carnarvon Dooloogarah wooden gate with four very enthusiastic runners deciding to run DOWN HILL East to West and tackle the 20km of freshly graded, loose hot sand at the end of the run, this im told wont be the same for next years event.

After much ducking into the scrub due to an early start the runners had their pace set by the 21.1km mark as Alison finnished her half marathon in 2hrs and 28 minutes, what a great effort.

Bryan,Emma and Donna hadnt raised much of a sweat up till this point but the day was starting to heat up with a maximum of 32 forecast, as they hit the sand country at around 9am i began sweating in the aircon of the support vehicle just watching them.

After 6hrs 47minutes and a lot of water Emma burges was cheered through the Ka Ka Mundi gate met by a loyal band of supporters (wilson, West kids) followed by Donna who was kind enough to not vomit on the running surface for the last 500m for Bryan who came over the finnish line in a little over seven hours.

The unbelievable effort they put in was rewarded by a storm to cool things down within five minutes of returning back to the station,

A great day was had by all (who wern't running) especially the support crews who monitored the runners and kept regular supplies of water up to them.

In the beery debrief after the run there was was alot of discussion about the future of the Gate2Gate and possibilties for next year, there seemed to be a confidence that this could become a must do event amongst the hardcore runners out there but should be run in the cooler months.

Congratulations runners, an awesome feat.
