Good morning to you all and happy National Volunteer Week 2021.

The theme of this year’s celebration is to Recognise, Reconnect and Reimagine.

The past 12 months have certainly given us all an opportunity to recognise how fortunate we are to live in Australia and reconnect with nature, which for many of us, was the pinnacle in keeping us healthy last year while we reimagined our post-COVID lives.

I’d personally like to thank you all for your support and engagement in the home-based volunteer opportunities offered last year including our Volunteer TED Talks, data and image processing as well as to those who were able to physically help us on our reserves in between lockdowns and border closures.

It certainly gave us all the chance to practice adaptability!

Thank you to those who have submitted to this year’s Volunteer Photo Competition as it provides all of us with a snapshot of life on our reserves and the people who manage them.

Now it is my great pleasure to announce the winners of the 2021 Volunteer Photo Competition and to thank Steve Parish OAM, for once again judging and for always being such a passionate advocate of the Australian bush, and how to capture it so beautifully on film.

Steve has kindly donated for each of our category winners access to his 'Travel Guides' and for our overall winner, access to his 'Masterclass'.

Now without further ado – the 2021 overall winner is Mark Davidson with a beautiful image of the White-winged Fairywren from Charles Darwin Reserve in Western Australia.

The winners of each of the categories are:

  • Fauna: Mark Davidson (And Overall Competition Winner)
  • Flora: Jacqui Raynes
  • Landscape: Shane Woltmann
  • People: Nicky Rolls

These winners will now feature throughout our publications for the next 12 months and I encourage you to view all of this year's entries:

On behalf of the Bush Heritage Board, our managers, and staff, we thank every one of you for your ongoing support, friendship, and passion for the work that we do to care for our natural heritage. Our staff would like to send their thanks via this short video message.

Have a wonderful volunteer week,

Heather Campbell
