With much anticipation, it’s now time to announce the winners of the inaugural Bush Heritage Volunteer Photographic Competition. But first, I’d like to acknowledge Nicolla (Nicky) Rolls, who has been volunteering with us for the last 11 years and who, in her role as Volunteer Advisory Committee Member, instigated the idea for this competition.
Says Nicky: "As a volunteer I've been fortunate to work on a number of reserves and see firsthand what we're all striving to achieve. I've enjoyed stunning sunsets over sand dunes at Craven’s Peak, seen Greater Gliders while spot-lighting on Yourka Reserve and 'weeded with a view' atop sandstone escarpments at Carnarvon Station Reserve.
"The images that I’ve taken remind me of treasured experiences on Bush Heritage properties and reinforce to me why nature must be protected and valued.
"For those unable to volunteer or travel to the reserves, photos are a perfect way to showcase the landscapes and ecosystems that Bush Heritage helps to protect and manage. That's how the idea of a Volunteer Photographic Competition came about."
I’d also like to express my personal thanks to our judge and Bush Heritage Ambassador, Steve Parish. I have known Steve for over 35 years and can attest to his outstanding Nature photography and the influence he's had on conservation in Australia. Steve has dedicated his lifetime to photographing the Australian bush in a way that inspires us to keep it healthy forever! His photos make it possible for people of all abilities to appreciate the places we protect. As judge of this competition he brings great skill, appreciation and support to photographers of all abilities.
So, without further ado I’d like to announce the overall winner of the 2018 Volunteer Photographic Competition:
Brad Maryan, (WA). This image was taken on Hamelin Reserve of the Mengden's Brown Snake (Pseudonaja mengdeni).
Brad’s image is sure to be used by our communications team throughout the year and I’d like to offer my congratulations for this achievement.
I’d like to announce the winners of each of the overall categories:
- Fauna – Brad Maryan, WA, “Mengden's brown snake”
- Flora – Pauline Mahood, NSW, Hamelin Reserve “Frilled”
- Landscape – Nathan Manders, VIC, Cravens Peak Reserve (QLD), “Big Blue Sky“
- People – Terry Cooke, NSW, Carnarvon Reserve (QLD), “Murray and Ellie”
These images will feature in our social media and I’d like to congratulate and thank all of the winners and hope that our support of their work contributes to the ongoing development of their love of photography and the Australian bush.
Thank you to all of the volunteers who entered this competition. We've created a gallery of the entered photos and I encourage you all to check it out and admire the talent in our volunteering community.
I look forward to seeing the outcomes of this competition over the coming years as I remain a steadfast supporter of Bush Heritage and the talented volunteers we work with.
