Wunambal Gaambera enters the carbon economy

The Wunambal Gaambera Uunguu Fire Project was declared by the Clean Energy Regulator over some 800,000 hectares. This allows Traditional Owners to apply the savanna burning methodology to generate greenhouse gas abatement and sell these credits. Together with neighbouring north Kimberley groups it is the first project of its kind in WA.

Wunambal Gaambera have been busy managing fire on country for many years and have started being effective at large scales in the last few years. Fire management used to be something they had to find money to do but now its becoming a self-sustaining activity.

The first sale of credits will hopefully happen while the carbon tax remains around $25 per tonne until mid-year.
