The Thorny Devil Gift Card

The Thorny Devil Gift Card

$50.00

The Thorny Devil (Moloch horridus) is much gentler than its name suggests.  This ant-eating reptile can blend into its surroundings by changing colour. It also has grooves between its thorny scales that channel dew on its skin to its mouth – a handy trick for a desert dweller!

The Thorny Devil also has one of the coolest gaits in the animal kingdom - it doesn’t just walk, it rocks! Its gait is unmistakable: a slow, jerky movement that can help conceal it from predators. The Thorny Devil is vulnerable to habitat loss and disturbance. This bushgift helps Bush Heritage protect the Thorny Devil’s habitat on our Charles Darwin, Hamelin and Eurardy reserves in Western Australia, as well as Cravens Peak and Ethabuka reserves in Queensland.

Western Pygmy Possum Card

Western Pygmy Possum Card

$30.00

Western Pygmy Possums are small nocturnal marsupials. These wide-eyed possums are agile climbers; they use their tails like a fifth limb to help them climb through foliage.

Western Pygmy Possums mainly eat insects, but they’ll also sometimes feed on nectar and pollinate flowers as they move from plant-to-plant. The biggest threats to Western Pygmy Possums are predation from both feral and native animals, and loss of habitat through land clearing. With three species of Pygmy Possum already extinct, we know how important it is to look after those precious few remaining. This bushgift is helping Bush Heritage to provide feral animal control, habitat protection and nesting boxes to protect Western Pygmy Possums on our Chingarrup, Eurardy, Kojonup and Monjebup reserves in Western Australia.

Wedge-tailed Eagle Gift Card

Wedge-tailed Eagle Gift Card

$20.00

The Wedge-tailed Eagle is Australia’s largest bird of prey. With a wingspan of more than two metres, it is one of the biggest eagles in the world. Interestingly, these powerful birds are monogamous: once they find a partner, they mate for life.

The main threats to Wedge-tailed Eagles are land-clearing and the loss of nesting sites. This bushgift supports Bush Heritage’s work providing habitat and nesting sites for the endangered Tasmanian subspecies of the Wedge-tailed Eagle on our Liffey Valley Reserves. In doing so, we are ensuring these impressive eagles have ample nesting sites… and plenty of space to spread their wings!

Stuart Mill Spider Orchid Card

Stuart Mill Spider Orchid Card

$75.00

The Stuart Mill Spider-orchid (Caladenia cretacea) is a white flowering orchid found only in Victoria. Our John Colahan (J.C.) Griffin Reserve is home to some of the last of this threatened species.

Just 12 plants were found on the property in 2008. However, in partnership with Amaryllis Environmental and the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, a reintroduction program was started, which saw the number of Stuart Mill Spider-orchids on J.C. Griffin increase to 186 in 2017. The Stuart Mill Spider-orchid has a complex, interconnected relationship with its surrounding environment and is a good indicator of ecosystem health. Land clearing, over-grazing by livestock and feral herbivores and competition from invasive weeds have pushed the Stuart Mill Spider-orchid close to extinction and continue to threaten the species’ survival. This bushgift helps support Bush Heritage’s work on J.C. Griffin Reserve to provide a sanctuary for the threatened Stuart Mill Spider-orchid.

Golden-shouldered Parrot Card

Golden-shouldered Parrot Card

$150.00

The Golden-shouldered Parrot is famed for its bright jewel-like colouring. A totem species for the Olkola people of central Cape York, it is known as ‘Alwal’ in Olkola language.

This iconic bird was once seen in large flocks across the cape, but now there are only around 2000 individuals left in the bush. These brightly coloured birds have an interesting place to raise their young - nesting in conical termite mounds that can take up to 50 years to build. Alwal is at high risk from larger predatory birds that ambush the ground-foraging parrot from nearby woody vegetation. This bushgift supports Bush Heritage’s work with Olkola Land Managers, restoring traditional fire regimes to maintain the grassy flats and open woodlands that the parrots need in order to survive and thrive.

Boolcoomatta Gift Card

Boolcoomatta Gift Card

$200.00

Bush Heritage’s Boolcoomatta Reserve is a sprawling 63,000 hectare sanctuary for arid-zone plant and wildlife species. Once a sheep station, its sweeping plains boast saltbush shrub lands, classic Red Gum creeks and ephemeral wetlands.

Bush Heritage’s Boolcoomatta Reserve is a sprawling 63,000 hectare sanctuary for arid-zone plant and wildlife species. Once a sheep station, its sweeping plains boast saltbush shrub lands, classic Red Gum creeks and ephemeral wetlands. Watching over all this are the dramatic Olary Ranges – some of the oldest rocks in Australia. Under the management of Bush Heritage, vulnerable Yellow-footed Rock Wallabies have recently returned to Boolcoomatta. This bushgift is helping Bush Heritage to protect all the species that call Boolcoomatta home.

Feather Flower Gift Card

Feather Flower Gift Card

$15.00

Bush Heritage’s reserves in south-west Western Australia are home to a rainbow of wispy-petaled Featherflower species. The Latin name for this genus, Verticordia, literally translates to ‘turner of hearts’ and that’s certainly what these brightly coloured beauties do!

We're fortunate enough to have a particular Verticordia only found on, and named after, our Eurardy Reserve: Verticordia x eurardyensis. This bushgift supports Bush Heritage’s work protecting Featherflowers on our Eurardy, Kojonup and Fitz-Stirling reserves in Western Australia. We’re protecting these Featherflower species by managing introduced herbivores, undertaking weed control and through integrated fire management.

The Greater Bilby Gift Card

The Greater Bilby Gift Card

$100.00

The Greater Bilby, with its grey fur and long pink ears, is Australia’s answer to the Easter Bunny. However, unlike the rabbit population in Australia, Bilby numbers are falling rapidly.

These nocturnal marsupials are the only surviving relative of the Lesser Bilby and have co-existed with Aboriginal people for over 60,000 years. Sadly, since European settlement, they’ve been pushed close to extinction. The Greater Bilby is under threat from predation by foxes and feral cats, and competition for food from livestock and rabbits. This bushgift helps support Bush Heritage’s work with the Martu people to assist the development of the Birriliburu Indigenous Protected Area conservation and land management program in remote Western Australia. “If anyone is going to save the Bilby and the other animals in this landscape, it’s going to be Indigenous rangers through programs like the Birriliburu partnership,” says Bush Heritage ecologist Dr Vanessa Westcott.
