You can have a transformative impact

Philanthropy presents you with a powerful opportunity to consider the world’s most pressing issues, dream about a better future and then bridge that gap through strategic contributions to change-making organisations.

Our natural environment has never been in stronger need of protection, in the face of growing threats from land-clearing, invasive species, inappropriate fire regimes and a rapidly changing climate.

You can help shape the future of Australia’s natural places – a future where our extraordinary landscapes and the plants and animals that they support remain safe and well-managed for future generations.

Align your giving with your values

Our supporters are the kind of people who recognise the many threats facing Australia’s natural environment and have made the bold decision to change the trajectory of biodiversity loss and climate change.

Whether you care about protecting native flora and fauna, enjoy seeing beautiful landscapes, feel concerned about the impacts of climate change on human wellbeing, or just believe in leaving the world a better place for future generations, we can work together to return the bush to good health.

We appreciate each and every one of our supporters and work to find meaningful opportunities for everyone to contribute, whether that's through donating, volunteering or spreading awareness of Bush Heritage through their networks.

The impact you could have

The story of Bush Heritage is really the story of tens of thousands of ordinary people coming together across more than 30 years to give what they can to ensure that Australia’s majestic native wildlife and beautiful landscapes are protected forever.

Generous donations from so many individuals, businesses and foundations have helped us to grow from a small, regional landholder in Tasmania to a national force for nature. While we continue to seek ways to diversify and grow our revenue streams to deliver greater impact, philanthropy and major gifts remains the most straightforward enabler of our success within the timeframe that nature is demanding.

Philanthropic contributions from just a few hundred supporters represent our single largest revenue stream and account for almost a third of our overall income each year.

Your philanthropic support could give us the financial security to commit to long-term, landscape-scale projects that result in real and lasting change for the environment across our vast continent.

How we show appreciation

We take pride in getting to know our philanthropic supporters personally and providing stewardship aligned with their wishes and preferences.

We also recognise that outstanding contributions of time, talent, funding, connections and recommendations are deserving of exceptional acknowledgement.

We look forward to working with you to create a program of recognition that celebrates your unique contribution.  Please get in touch with our team to talk more about how we can work with you.

How philanthropy works at Bush Heritage

Our philanthropy program begins with cumulative donations valued at $10,000 within one financial year.

1. Choose your type of gift

Money

  • You can donate online, via BPay or make a direct deposit. You can also donate via credit or debit card over the phone - call 1300 NATURE (628 873). See our donation page and its FAQs for more details.
  • Money is our preferred gift because we can immediately put it to good use.

Property and assets

  • You can donate shares, securities, currency, real estate and other property to Bush Heritage.
  • We can accept donations of shares directly without brokerage fees. We can also accept donations of shares through ShareGift Australia, who provide brokerage-free donation services.
  • There may be tax advantages to donating property rather than selling it and donating the proceeds.
  • For Bush Heritage to accept gifts of property and other assets, the gift must first be discussed with us, agreed to be accepted and then wholly owned and controlled by Bush Heritage once donated.
  • Bush Heritage reserves the right to accept, refuse or return any gift of property or asset for any reason, including whether the gift is suitable or aligns with our long-term strategic goals.
  • If a property valuation is needed, it's the donor’s responsibility to get an independent valuation to the satisfaction of the Australian Tax Office. Bush Heritage may be able to help organise this.

In-kind support

  • You can provide in-kind support, including pro bono support, to Bush Heritage.
  • Examples of in-kind support include discounts on goods or services, expert consulting, access to software, use of an office or event space, or payment of catering fees on our behalf.
  • Bush Heritage reserves the right to accept, refuse or return any in-kind support for any reason, including whether the gift is suitable or aligns with our long-term strategic goals.
  • We're unable to provide a tax receipt for in-kind support, but we recognise these gifts in the same way as financial donations using reasonable valuation methods.
  • For a gift to be considered in-kind support, it has to not be a part of our volunteering program and the support must not be able to be on-sold for money.

Pledges

  • If you'd like to make a gift, but can't at the moment, you can promise to do so at a later date with a pledge. We recognise and appreciate pledges in the same way as the philanthropic gift each represents.
  • Pledges can be verbal, written, or even drafted into a formal gift agreement and signed by all parties.
  • A pledge outlines 1) what the gift is, 2) the value of the gift, 3) the purpose of the gift, and 4) when the gift will be transferred (for example, on a certain date or when certain events take place, such as the sale of property).

2. Decide on the purpose of your gift

General purposes

  • A general purpose donation allows Bush Heritage flexibility to direct your funds where needed.
  • General purpose donations are our top priority, because they allow us to be responsive to the ever-changing pressures on Australia’s environment.
  • Owing to the nature of general purpose donations, we can't report specifically on what your donation has helped us achieve, but we're happy to provide an update on our general activities or an area of our work that interests you.
  • We encourage general purpose donations of any size.

Foundational programs

  • A donation towards our foundational programs allows you to support a specific area of interest such as:
  • Donations towards a foundational program are used for the most urgent and important needs of that program.
  • We report on what's achieved and learnt within that program in the year that you donated.
  • Where possible, we also provide opportunities for supporters to join discussions, meetings, events and reserve trips related to their funded program area.
  • Please talk with our philanthropy team if you'd like to support a foundational program.

Key projects

  • Owing to the complexities inherent in key projects, opportunities to support these are limited to donations of at least $50,000, or less at our discretion.
  • A donation towards a key project allows you to support a distinct body of work with a defined scope, timeline and outcomes.
  • The scope of a key project can vary from a specific activity at a single reserve, all the way to a national undertaking over multiple years.
  • We always seek to first fund key projects already identified and budgeted within our conservation management process as this enables us to deliver on our core mission. However, we're open to discussing new and exploratory activities that align with our strategic needs if a supporter is willing to fund this additional work in its entirety.
  • We provide specific, regular and tailored reporting on what we achieve and learn in delivering key projects.
  • We also provide opportunities for supporters of key projects to meet with project staff and visit the project area.
  • Please talk with our philanthropy team if you'd like to support a key project.

Matched donation

  • From time to time, Bush Heritage has matched giving campaigns, where philanthropic donors might pledge to contribute a certain amount based on the contributions made by others (e.g. each dollar is doubled, up to $10,000).
  • Each matched giving campaign is unique in its purpose, timing and incentives, and we discuss these conditions with matched giving donors before the general public is invited to support these campaigns.
  • We're interested to receive expressions of interest from people that might want to support future matched giving campaigns.

3. Consider your timing

Multi-year donation

  • We especially welcome philanthropic commitments that extend over multiple years, as this provides us with certainty to plan work ahead.
  • If you're considering multiple philanthropic gifts over several years, please let us know as we'd love to recognise your elevated trust in our organisation.

One-off donation

  • You're welcome to make a single philanthropic donation at any time.
  • Many of our supporters would like to make a significant gift to Bush Heritage sooner rather than later within this critical decade, but are concerned about the tax implications. It's possible to make a larger donation now, and spread your donation against your tax return over up to five years. (Follow the link for more information, including the relevant government form.)
  • There are no ongoing requirements to donate, and you're welcome to be celebrated and hear about the impact of your giving for the lifetime of your donation (this typically includes the current and next year following that gift).
  • Many of our supporters decide each year which charities they would like to support, and many have generously provided us with a unique philanthropic gift every year for a decade or more.
