Aboriginal Partnerships: Doing things the Right Way

DJAARA, the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation, and national conservation not-for-profit Bush Heritage Australia yesterday launched a shared plan to guide landscape management across nearly 3,000 hectares of Bush Heritage-managed reserves in north-west Victoria.

We’re building a secure digital place for biocultural knowledge to be stored and used.

We gratefully acknowledge Djaara (the Dja Dja Wurrung people), the Traditional Custodians of Djandak (Dja Dja Wurrung Country) in central Victoria, for over 14 years of partnership.

When Bruce Hammond first laid eyes on the Breakaways at Evelyn Downs, he saw an opportunity to support the protection of one of the most significant parcels of Country for Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara and Yankunytjatjara people. 

Conservation Futures is a collaboration across sectors and organisations towards the concept of an ‘Integrated Knowledge System’, where knowledge of Country and landscapes can be securely stored.

Ancient stone tools, rock art and the connecting of storylines and songlines characterised the first Bidjara cultural heritage survey at Edgbaston Reserve.

Brogo Reserve is on Yuin Country – so every visit is an opportunity to get to know the lands and waters that my Ancestors knew like the backs of their hands.

This NAIDOC Week, we were lucky enough to hear directly from Elders themselves, as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who sent in powerful words from their ancestral homelands. 

It was a blip in its ageless history, but a brief shift in land tenure forever changed Charles Darwin Reserve. Traditional practices were disrupted and Badimia people were denied access to many parts of their Country, including important sacred sites.

In 2021, Wiradjuri Elder Uncle James Ingram and Bush Heritage staff walked across Tarcutta Hills for a cultural heritage survey. They were headed towards a new era in collaborative land management for the reserve. 

In May 2023, six indigenous ranger groups travelled to Pullen Pullen Reserve, Maiawali Country, in Western Queensland. It is here that the Night Parrot was rediscovered in 2013.

Can you imagine nature without sound? No bellbirds, or lyrebirds. No bleating frogs or whispering leaves. For some scientists seeing is believing, but for ecologist Daniella Teixiera it’s hearing that is believing.
