Vote #1: Brush-tailed Phascogale
Brush-tailed Phascogales are nocturnal and rarely seen. However, numbers are declining and threats such as habitat loss, fragmentation and feral predators, are putting it at risk.
We're incredibly pleased to announce today a multi-million dollar donation from US philanthropic groups Earth Alliance and Global Wildlife Conservation to further our bushfire recovery efforts and restore damaged ecosystems following the Black Summer bushfires.
Bush Heritage is among three Australian organisations (the others being Aussie Ark and WIRES Australian Wildlife Rescue) awarded an initial $1 million US share in more than $3 million US pledged by the Australia Wildfire Fund during the bushfire crisis. Earth Alliance and Global Wildlife Conservation subsequently provided further support to Bush Heritage bringing the total donation to almost $2.4 million AUD.
As many of you may know, we experienced fires on seven of our 36 reserves from November 2019 to February 2020.
We are humbled to receive this level of financial support to fund our conservation work in fire-affected areas, where our native species need our help now more than ever.
The funds will be directed towards bushfire recovery actions on the ground including ecological assessments of impacted areas, provision of shelter and feeding structures for native wildlife and engaging with Aboriginal people including right-way fire and a right-way science approach.
Earth Alliance was cofounded by environmental activist and Academy Award®-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio, businesswoman and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, and investor and philanthropist Brian Sheth, to address the dual climate and biodiversity crises.
Earth Alliance launched the Australia Wildfire Fire fund in January 2020 to assist critical firefighting efforts, aid local communities, enable wildlife rescue and recovery and support the long-term restoration of unique ecosystems.
