Self-guided visits
Some of our less remote properties offer the chance for a self-guided visit; perfect for an easy day trip or as part of a longer journey.
Our seasonal campgrounds are located on some of our remote to very remote reserves and offer a chance to immerse yourself in these protected landscapes, with access to designated self‑guided drives and walks that highlight key features of the reserves.
Visitor numbers are limited, and facilities are minimal; true bush camping. Campers must be fully self‑sufficient with all supplies, equipment, and safety gear.
Bookings are essential and are best made in advance to secure one of our limited sites.
Online registrations are available two months before the camping season opens. In exceptional circumstances, the camping season dates may be changed or closed due to unexpected safety issues or conservation needs.
Camping seasons may differ between reserves but are scheduled with visitor safety in mind and to avoid disruptions to key conservation work.
Boolcoomatta Reserve (SA)
Currently closed
Boolcoomatta campground is unfortunately closed for 2026 season. Due to impacts from sustained drought conditions earlier in the year and then recent heavy rainfalls, causing significant track damage, we are unable to open camping this season.
Bush Heritage has prioritised its conservation activities and will work towards re opening camping in 2027. The safety of our visitors is a key priority and minimising impacts on our conservation work. Sorry for the disappointment but hope you can visit in future.
Boolcoomatta Camping Guide

Boolcoomatta is about 100 km west of Broken Hill and 470 km north east of Adelaide, in the South Australian arid rangelands. The camp ground is a small, simple bush camp located about 4 km from the homestead. It's predominantly open country with some Casuarina trees dotted throughout the landscape.
There are a number of self-guided drives around the reserve and we recommend a minimum stay of two nights. Booking ahead is essential as camping spaces are limited.
Carnarvon Station Reserve (Qld)
Currently closed
Carnarvon Station is unfortunately closed for the 2026 season. This is due to fuel shortages and the impact this has had on public roads to Carnarvon and our need to focus our resources on essential conservation work.
We hope to re opening camping again in 2027. The safety of our visitors is a key priority and minimising impacts on our conservation work. Sorry for the disappointment but hope you can visit in future.

The reserve is in south-east central Queensland, to the south and west of Carnarvon National Park. It’s about 870 km south-west of Rockhampton and about 940 km north-west of Brisbane.
You’ll camp at the scenic Billabong Campground, encircled by stately eucalypts. As you walk or drive around the property, you’ll see an intriguing range of habitat types – from bluegrass grasslands to eucalypt woodlands.
