Carn camping guide April 23 770 KB

Carnarvon is now closed for the season. Bookings will reopen in April 2025.

Abutting Queensland’s Carnarvon Gorge National Park, the spectacular Carnarvon Station Reserve is one of the few remaining strongholds for woodland species largely lost to the rest of eastern Australia. The rugged sandstone hills, narrow valley floors and high escarpments create a dramatic setting, offering natural protection to its inhabitants.

The reserve is in south-east central Queensland, to the south and west of Carnarvon National Park. It’s about 870km south-west of Rockhampton and about 940km north-west of Brisbane.

You’ll camp at the scenic Billabong Campground, encircled by stately eucalypts. As you walk or drive around the property, you’ll see an intriguing range of habitat types – from bluegrass grasslands to eucalypt woodlands.

You’ll see White Stallion, an ancient white sandstone column, and take in the views from a lookout previously used by the police to spy on bushrangers. At the Piebald art site and the Paint Pots you’ll see sites of cultural significance to the Bidjara people – the Traditional Custodians of this country.

At Blue Water Springs you’ll hear a chorus of frogs and perhaps even spot a Koala. Some of the other inhabitants you might run into are Herbert’s rock-wallabies, Northern Quolls, Turquoise Parrots and Glossy Black-cockatoos.

Close-up of a kangaroo-like mammal crouched low amongst the dry grass of a woodland floor. Its browny-grey body faces the camera, but it is looking off to the left, showing off a broad cream stripe covering the lower half of its face. Its ears are tilted backwards as if listening to something behind it, and it appears unaware of the camera.
