Out on Ethabuka Reserve, a sprawling 215,000 hectare sanctuary in the north of the Simpson Desert, snow is a little hard to come by.
So reserve manager Helene Aubault has built a red sandman, complete with gum nut eyes and a carrot nose, shrivelled from the heat.
Though desert country Ethabuka is home to a wetland system of national significance, brimming with shrimps, fish and waterbirds following good rains. It also has the richest list of reptile species in Australia, including our largest goanna – the Perentie.
