Australia’s largest bird of prey and one of the biggest eagles in the world with a wingspan of more than two metres. These powerful birds are monogamous: they mate for life.

The “kree kree” call of the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo sounds like a trumpet, announcing the presence of Australia’s beloved ‘cockie’. Equally unique is its endlessly fascinating plumage, resembling a star-scattered night sky.

Out on Ethabuka Reserve, a sprawling 215,000 hectare sanctuary in the north of the Simpson Desert, snow is a little hard to come by. So reserve manager Helene Aubault has built a red sandman, complete with gum nut eyes and a carrot nose, shrivelled from the heat.

Splendid Everlastings (Rhodanthe chlorocephala subsp. splendida) are a classic paper daisy that flower annually across Western Australia during wildflower season.

Australia has more mistletoe species than anywhere in the world. Of the 90 species, 70 are native and grow on trees such as eucalypts, banksias, wattles, mangroves and casuarinas.

Our reserves in south-west WA are home to a rainbow of wispy-petaled Featherflower species. Their Latin name (Verticordia) means ‘turner of hearts’ and that’s what these beauties do!

The breeding males of the Purple-backed Fairy-wren (Malurus assimilis) sport chestnut shoulders and an azure crown, and are considered an extremely vocal and gregarious species.
